The impatience of the day
pries open my eyes
with its crowbar of sunlight.

All is orange inside my head
until the lids lift
and you're there in detail
like a sheet of paper
magnified 10X
fingerprints are valleys
thinning hair a forest of starved trees
the sheets a frozen wave on the ocean.

All turns into a sunset of the mind
created by the pollution
of this century we are born into
warm red light amplified
by the air we breath in
ages of dust and smoke seen clearly,
a desert light distant and caustic
alarms, voices, cars and pedestrians
waking the grey conscious
walking by this rage of blood
flooding the dikes and dams
the damned passages and channels of my brain.

The weightless warmth of sleep
skinny dipped into and risen above-
leviathans pull me back down
into that wonderful fathomless blue-
but men above construct solid frames
for me to lie back into.

Once aware of the battle
I am here and woken
to the flatness of the room
the limits of three dimensions
the oppressive weight of touch
and gaze and of moving
flowing into my bloodstream
like saltwater into a river.
Morning-
here I am again.
